AverTV HD DVR Review

Until the
Hauppuage HD PVR
and now the AverTV HD DVR there has not been way to record and save HD programs from encrypted satellite and cable channels, such as premium channels. Sure, you can lease a HD DVR from the cable or satellite provider, or buy a TIVO HD recorder and get a cablecard. But you can’t save them on DVD as HD. Well now you can. Using component cables (to get around the DRM/HDCP issues), the HD DVR can record any program from a digital tuner (cable, satellite, or over-the-air) in HD. Using the included TotalMedia software, you can burn a Blu-ray compatible disk using your existing DVD writer. An hour of HD content (at the standard bit rate) will fit on a single layer DVD, and 2 hours on a dual layer. That’s a lot better than buying a $500 Blu-ray writer and $4+ Blu-ray disks. Then just play in your Blu-ray player which includes the Sony PS3 and Xbox 360.
PROS:
- Records and burns any HD program from a set-top box.
- Includes IR Blasters for changing channels on the set-top box
- Uses the free TitanTV for scheduling recording stations and time
- Works with Windows 7 Media Center like a tuner (using the third party
DVBlink software)
- HDMI ouput for playback
- Can use standard DVD’s for burning HD content
- Works with XP, Vista and Windows 7 operating systems
- The low profile, black design is better looking than the Hauppauge HD PVR
CONS:
- Requires a 2.0 dual processor or better for PC playback
- No time-shifting during the recording (unless using Windows 7 Media Center)
- No optical input (only stereo)
- No remote
- HDMI playback can only be used for programs recorded by the HD DVR
- Will not record in 480p, only 480i

COMMENTS:This box is Avermedia's answer to the
Hauppauge HD PVR.
This box looks cooler and actually records at a slightly higher bit rate than the Hauppauge. If you want to record premium cable or satellite channels in true HD (using component cables) and you don't really need the recording to have surround sound, this is a great option. The unit uses a PC for storage of the recordings and for playback. The unit also has HDMI output for playback on your HDTV. If surround sound is a requirement, consider the Hauppauge unit, which has both optical in and out connections, but no HDMI for replay.
