HDTV Tuner Hard Drive Recommendations

One thing to consider when you add a HDTV tuner is an increase in your storage capacity. An hour of recorded HDTV program could use 8 to 9 GB of disk space and you certainly don’t want to run out of space while recording you favorite TV show or football game. Fortunately hard disk space is cheap and getting cheaper. If you watch the newspaper ads from places like CompUSA, Circuit City and others, you're sure to find some good deals. A "good" deal these days is an internal hard drive at $.25 or less a Gig and an external hard drive (USB/firewire) at $.50 or less a Gig. The smaller drives normally have the best cost/Gig, but don't settle for anything less than 120Gb.

Of course most of these specials require you to send in rebates, so if you don’t mind a little hassle these are great deals. You can use an external drive either USB 2.0 or firewire to record and replay HDTV shows, so an external is an easy way the expand your HDTV recording capacity.

NOTE: If you have an older PC and are unsure if it supports USB 2.0, go here to check.

I have two USB connected external drives I swap between my recording PC and my viewing PC. Works great and I don’t have to worry about tying up valuable C: drive space with HDTV recordings.
