Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1250 Hybrid Tuner Review

The WinTV-HVR-1250 is a single hybrid (analog/digital) PCI-e based tuner from Hauppauge.
PROS:
- Low profile tuner with low profile bracket included in the package
- The tuner has a hardware encoder for analog signals (less main procesor overhead)
- The tuner can be configured as both analog and digital in Vista Media Center using the
Vista Hybrid Routine.
Windows 7 Media Center will automatically detect the tuner as both a analog and digital
- Included application works with TitanTV Electronic Programming Guide(EPG)
- Excellent at pulling in weak signals
- Driver and application support for both 32 & 64 bit Vista and Windows 7 as well as XP and MCE 2005.
- Supports clearQAM(digital/HD cable) with included application (WinTV), Vista Media Center does not support clearQAM
- Supports clearQAM with Window 7 Media Center with latest drivers from Hauppauge Website (see link below)
CONS:- Included remote will not work with Microsoft Media Center
- Included Win-TV application software somewhat confusing to install, setup and run.

COMMENTS:
The HVR-1250 is little brother to the dual tuner
HVR-2250.
It has only one hybrid tuner which means one analog or one digital station can be watched/recorded at any given time.
Unlike the HVR-2250, HVR-1250 does not have an FM tuner. The included remote will not work with Microsoft Media Center, only the (included on CD) Win-TV application. The Win-TV app is OK, but I would highly recommend either Microsoft's Media Center, BeyondTV or SageTV as the tuner app.
This is an excellent tuner if you want to see how a PC tuner works, as it's one of the lower cost tuners on the market and yet a high quality product. I would recommend it for cable, so you can watch both analog and digital stations, but for over the air, the
AverTV Duet
for just a little more makes better sense.
