Microsoft Media Center Edition (MCE) Free TV Tools & Tips


Here are various free tools and tips to enhance your MCE HDTV experience.

  • Use a digital tuner without an analog tuner

  • Add a Digital Subchannel
    Go to Settings>TV>Guide>Add Missing Channels>Add DTV Channel
    Add the channel, next and then save

  • Encoder Software for analog tuners
    If you have a hybrid tuner (both digital & analog), encoder software may be required to receive smooth video in Media Center (2005 & Vista). The Fusion tuners and the Vbox 164e for instance require encoders. See the install routine here.

  • Change Vista Media Center default TV recording storage location
    Go here.

  • Add S/PDIF surround sound
    Go to Settings>General>Media Center Setup>Set Up Your Speakers

  • Change where recorded and time-shift MCE DVR-MS files are saved, and correct overscan.
