Analog TV Encoders Explaination and Install Routine

PC analog tuners have to encode the incoming signal into a digital format as it is received, something not required for digital tuners. Digital/HDTV tuners receive already encoded information in MPEG-2 compressed format. Some analog tuners have a chip that takes care of the encoding. This is called hardware encoding and is preferred over the tuners who rely on software to do the encoding. The ATI 650 Wonder has a hardware encoder, whereas the Fusion HDTV5 uses software encoders.

Once encoded the then digital data is decoded to display on the monitor/TV and/or stored on a hard drive. Encoding software is not included with Media Center 2005 or Vista. Running a analog tuner without encoding software may cause high processor utilization resulting in jerky video display/recording. The routine described below will load and activate code designed specifically for Media Center (2005 & Vista) analog encoding.

The Fusion HDTV tuners and Vbox DTA-164e definitely need encoding software for analog in MCE, however the ATI HDTV Wonder, also a software card, does not because encoding software is included in its driver install.

Install Routine for Free Media Center Encoders

1) If not done already, download and unzip the Kram drivers (download here).

Run setup and reboot.

2) Download and unzip the DSFManager from here.

Open the DSFMgr app, find the filter "ATI Media Center Audio Encoder" on the list at the right, then highlight and double click on it.

Move the slider at the upper right to "Preferred" and click on the "Set New Merit" button.

NOTE: Under Vista you will have to run DSFMgr as Administrator. To do this, highlight the app icon and right click. Select run as administrator.

3) Reboot

4) DO NOT RUN THIS STEP FOR VISTA
Run TV Setup in MCE.

5) Reboot

Now you can start MCE, tune an analog channel and you should see smooth video. If not, reboot once more.
