Vista Kram HDTV Hybrid Tuner Install Routine

Windows 7 Media Center does NOT need this routine as it recognizes both of the hybrid tuners.

Somewhere between the RC1 & RC2 Vista builds, Microsoft inserted code that would no longer allow a hybrid tuner (such as the ATI HDTV Wonder, ATI Wonder 650 & Fusion HDTV3&5) to work as both an analog and digital tuner in Media Center using just the Kram drivers. There is still a way for this to be done, however it now requires a few more steps. The process is simple but does involve some minor registry manipulation. It may look long, but I’ve included (I believe) each step required, with the assumption that the user has little or no experience with Vista Media Center or the registry editor.

NOTE: This routine will not work for the Onair HDTV-GT at this time.

For instructions on installing the ATI Remote Wonder Plus (from the ATI HDTV Wonder package) under Vista, go here.

This routine will work with Vista SP1 but NOT with the Media Center 2008 TV Pack, also known as Fiji.

This routine is required if you want to use the ATI 650 Wonder or Hauppauge HVR-2250 as both for both digital TV tuner and a FM tuner with Vista Media Center.

This routine will work only for the ATI 650 Wonder, Hauppauge HVR-2250 and the Onair Creator under 64-bit Vista.

There should be little chance that anything will be screwed up by this process (if the instructions are followed), but here’s the usual disclaimer:

"This routine is provided for informational purposes only. This site cannot be held liable for any problems created by installing said routine. In other words, install at your own risk."

WARNING: Once this routine is completed, Vista Media Center will think your hybrid tuner is two separate tuners (one digital and one analog). If you try to record two shows at the same time (1 analog & 1 digital) it will NOT warn you that this is a problem. You will lose one, perhaps both recordings.

THE INSTALL:

You can skip the Kram drivers download & install if you have the ATI 650 Wonder, Hauppauge HVR-2250, AVerTV Hybrid Ultra USB or the OnAir Creator tuner. Download and unzip the Kram drivers (download here).

Run setup and reboot.

Install your tuner and the tuner drivers. If you've already done this, that's fine.

The ATI HDTV Wonder drivers download and install automatically.

For the ATI 650 Wonder drivers, select "Locate and install driver software" when prompted. Vista will find and install drivers from Windows Update automatically.

For other hybrid tuners try "Locate and install driver software" first when prompted. If unsuccessful, use the tuners' install CD.

The Fusion HDTV Vista drivers can be downloaded here.

Be sure and reboot after you install drivers.

Hook up your antenna(s) and/or cable to the tuner. For more antenna info go here.

Start the Media Center application, go to Tasks>settings>TV>Set up TV Signal

Run setup, select “I will manually configure my TV signal” when prompted.

Select “antenna” for the standard TV signal.

Select Digital Antenna (ATSC) for the antenna type.

Then select “No” for do you have another TV source.

When you are asked if you want to use the guide answer “No” (you’ll do this later).

When you get to Digital Antenna Strength, it will say Media Center can’t find any listings, that’s OK, just click Next.

Now click Finish and exit Media Center.

Next go to the Start Menu. Type regedit in the Start Search box at the bottom of the menu then press enter.

This starts the Registry Editor. You’ll need to expand the folders on the left side as follows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Media Center>Service>Video>Tuners> {71985F48-1CA1-11D3-9CC8-00C04F7971E0}

Highlight {71985F48-1CA1-11D3-9CC8-00C04F7971E0}, right click, select export and save it on you desktop as digtalTV. We will restore this key later.

Minimize the registry editor, restart Media Center and go back to Setup TV Signal. This time you will setup the analog side of the tuner.

When asked, select manually configure my TV signal, again.

Now select your configuration: Cable, Satellite or Antenna and proceed through the setup. NOTE: If you setup with Satellite or a set top box, Media Center will be expecting an IR Blaster so it can change channels and your connection will need to be composite (red, white, yellow cables) or s-video to the tuner.
Again you do not have to setup the Guide yet.
Once completed, exit Media Center.

Maximize Registry Editor and find:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Media Center>Service>EPG

It’s just up from the area you were working in earlier. Look for Dword “atsc” (on the right of the screen), it should be the second value listed. Highlight and right click on it, then select modify, change the value to 1 and save. This will enable the digital TV Guide.

Exit registry. Go to the desktop, double click on the digitalTV icon we saved earlier and answer yes when prompted. This restores the digital tuner information in the registry.

Now reboot.

Once restarted, enter Media Center then go to Tasks>settings>TV>Guide and run Set Up Guide Listings.

Once completed go back to Tasks>settings>TV and run Digital TV Antenna Strength to scan for your digital channels. Uncheck the ones you can’t receive.

Next start Live TV and check it out. You will begin at the lowest configured analog channel. To get to the digital stations, just channel down one.

If you get jerky analog display you may need to install a software encoder. A Fusion tuner will definitely need it, the ATI 650 will not (it has a hardware encoder), and the ATI Wonder has the encoder software as part of the drivers, so it should be OK. Go here for more encoder information.

NOTE: If you ever run TV setup again, you’ll have to rerun this routine if you still want both analog and digital from your hybrid tuner.

This routine will also work for two hybrid tuners.

Please send feedback on this process here. Be sure and include an e-mail address if you want a response.
